Abstract

In 10 cases with warty atypia where an obvious diagnosis of condyloma acuminatum was made by colposcopy and 12 cases where koilocytotic atypia on cytology was observed and flat condyloma was confirmed by biopsy, a comparative study was made on cytology of both types.
In warty atypia the incidence rate of koilocytotic atypia was low as 30.0%(3/10) but the incidence rate of bistaining metaplastic parabasal cells was 60.0%(6/10), being higher than 25.0%(3/12) of flat condyloma.
Dyskeratocytes was most frequently observed finding in the cytology of condyloma acuminatum, which was noted in more than 90% in both types.
The incidence rate of binucleation and eosinophilic background was 60-75%, showing no difference between both types.
In cases showing obvious warty atypia by colposcopy, frequently koilocytotic atypia is absent on cytology. Also, in cases showing obvious koilocytotic atypia, often flat condyloma is observed and it is said in most cases that no clinically relevant finding is observed. These should be understood as clinical characteristics and as cytological signs, it seems.
