Abstract

1) A case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma in the stomach and gall bladder of a 60-year-old female was reported in this paper.
2) Pathohistological findings of the lesion excised under the diagnosis of stomach submucosal tumor were of benign fibrous histiocytoma. The tumor involved in the stomach and gall bladder regions at operation. A recurrence of cysts was however observed below the liver bed about 5 months after operation.
3) Aspiration smears from the recurrent tumor stained with Papanicolaou indicated malignant features including collagen fibrous filaments, inflammatory cells in addition to polinuclear giant cells with prominant nucleoli. The diagnosis of malignant fibrous histiocytoma was then given.
4) Tumor cells were classified into 4 types of histocyte-like cells and 2 types of spindle cells according to the size and form of their nuclei. Either of these cells had a transition into histocytes morphologically with active phagocytic action.
5) The patient died showing brain metastasis-like symptoms 7 months after operation.
