Abstract
Müllerian mixed tumor (MMT) is a rare disease of which prognosis is very poor. The tumor, consisting of epitherial and non-epitherial elements, is difficult to be made a correct diagnosis before treatment. In the period from 1950 through 1988, we encountered a total of 44 cases of MMT located in the uterine body. The results of cytological and histological analyses before treatment are as follows:
1) Cytodiagnosis before treatment was positive for malignancy in 73.0% of natients (27/37). The percentage of correct diagnosis for MMT was 10.8%(4/37).
2) No tissues of non-epitherial origin could be identified in the cases who could be diagnosed to have MMT before treatment.
3) Adenocarcinoma was found to be frequent (17/37=46.0%) among all the MMT cases by the pretreatment cytodiagnosis.
4) In pretreatment cytodiagnosis, the presence of nonepitherial elements was confirmed in 13.5% of patients (5/37).
5) The percentage of correct histological diagnosis of MMT was 59.5%(25/42) before treatment.
6) In 36.0% of patients (9/25), MMT could be histologically diagnosed and tissue of non-epitherial origin could be identified.
