Abstract
Seventeen cases of metastases of the uterus or vagina from extragenital primary tumors are firstly presented. The primary tumors were located in the rectum (seven patients), stomach (five), colon (four) and kidney (one). Cytologically the presence of signet-ring cells with no atypical squamous cells is indicative of gastric cancer, and a striking pallisading pattern suggests colon cancer.
Tumor diathesis, few atypical cells and a solitary pattern are the characteristic cytological findings used to recognize extragenital cancer originating from primary uterine cancer. Secondly the data from 65 autopsy cases of metastatic carcinoma of the uterus or vagina were analyzed. Forty-six cases were accompanied by carcinomatous peritonitis, 10 cases were of hematogenous or lymphogenous metastatic tumors, and 9 cases involved direct invasion.
