Abstract
We observed touch and scraped preparations from four cases of histologically confirmed desmoid. The cytologic features of the desmoid were (1) a granular background, (2) the presence of spindle-shaped fibroblasts, collagenous connective tissue, swollen endothelium, and a small number of lymphocytes, (3) no necrotic material or mitotic figures. The size and shape of the swollen endothelium was similar to that of fibroblasts.
We immunocytochemically demonstrated that 20% of the spindle cells were positive for factor VIII. Coffee bean nuclei and a sheet configuration of the endothelium were useful for differentiating the endothelial cells of desmoid from fibroblasts.
