Abstract
Objective: We reviewed the accuracy of aspiration cytology of salivary gland lesions at the Funabashi Municipal Medical Center.
Study design: Aspiration cytology of 127 salivary gland lesions (21 non-neoplastic lesions, 85 benign tumors, 21 malignant tumors) were reviewed together with results of histological examination.
Results: Accuracy of benign and malignant tumors was 95.6%, and the agreement rate with histological type was 76.3%. Three false-positive cases were pleomorphic adenoma, basal cell adenoma and Warthin's tumor. Two false-negative cases were adenoid cystic carcinoma and car cinoma in pleomorphic adenoma. Thirteen cases (10.2%) belonged to the insufficient material group.
Conclusion: On the cytological examination of salivary gland, accurate diagnosis should be based on close cytological examination of the specimen including the cells and background, and the clinical date, because all components of the lesion may not always be obtained by aspiration.
