Surfaces having stratified functional properties is necessary for the surface texture of sliding surfaces such as recent automobile engine to reduce environmental loads. However, the surfaces having stratified functional properties are difficult to evaluate by commonly used roughness parameters, because plateau region and the valley region need to beanalyzed separately. This research developed an evaluation method for the surfaces having stratified functional properties by applying an image processing technology. In addition, this paper presented optimal calculation conditions as a guide and the effectiveness of the developed evaluation method through experiments. This paper presented that the proposal method is able to evaluate the plateau region and valley region of the surfaces having stratified functional properties without complicated operation processes like ISO 13565-3 and previous researches. The result of this research is able to facilitate to perform numerical data management for sliding surfaces such as the surfaces having stratified functional properties and contribute to the surface texture design for friction reducing and anti-wear.
