Since universities and public research institutes do not have the function of commercialization, it is essential to transfer the research results to industries in order to generate innovation based on their research results. However, research results are implicit and highly sticky, and there is an asymmetry of information between the sender and receiver of technology. Therefore, there is a big barrier to technology transfer and commercialization of the research results produced by universities and public research institutions.
In this study, we analyzed the case studies of industry-university collaborative research that led to commercialization from the viewpoint of proof of concept, and discussed the knowledge sharing that is necessary for successful commercialization of research results. From the case studies, it was confirmed that the industry-university collaborative research promotes the commercialization of research results by "creatively resolving the information asymmetry" that occurs among stakeholders. In addition, it was found that setting research goals with business issues as the starting point and sharing these goals among stakeholders are effective in promoting commercialization. In addition, the resolution of sticky information, It became clear that promoting collaborative research between industry and academia with an awareness of the activities for resolving stickiness as indicated by von Hippel would be effective in promoting technology transfer and contributing to commercialization.
