Abstract
Today, English is used throughout Asian countries. Particularly in Singapore, they have set high importance on English education as a strategy to unify the multiracial nation. However, according to a Japanese newspaper article, Singapore English has come to have some distinctive features. In this study, we analyzed metrically Singaporean English newspapers of 1950 and 2000. As a result, an increase in the appearance of the auxiliary CAN, which is reported to be one of the features of Singaporean English, was perceived even in a public medium such as a newspaper. Particularly in science articles, the percentage of CAN-appearance has increased more than in any other field for these 50 years.
