Abstract
Rectal prolapse is a common condition in childhood. Its etiology is considered to be weakness of the pelvic floor. Many of the affected patients have only mild symptoms and are treated conservatively. For patients with whom medical therapy failed, surgical therapies are performed. We report the case of a 5-year-old boy who underwent transanal mucosal resection by laparoscopic rectopexy for rectal mucosal prolapse. His mucosal prolapse relapsed immediately after the first operation and he was referred to our hospital. Laparoscopic examination showed that his long and flabby rectus was in the deep Douglas pouch. We diagnosed him as having complete rectal prolapse; thus, we performed laparoscopic rectopexy. His postoperative course was uneventful and he was discharged on the 6th postoperative day. Laparoscopic rectopexy is a minimally invasive, cosmetically acceptable, and feasible procedure.
