Abstract

Duplication of the alimentary tract is a rare developmental mass lesion that can occur anywhere in the entirety of the gastrointestinal tract. We encountered a case of intestinal duplication occurring in the ileocecal valve and performed laparotomy ileocecal resection. A 10-month-old male infant was brought to our hospital with vomiting. Abdominal ultrasonography showed intussusception in the ascending colon and the patient received a diagnostic and therapeutic enema. Although contrast entered the ileum and a claw sign disappeared, there was still a smooth-walled cyst at the ileocecal junction. Abdominal computed tomography showed a cystic mass at the ileocecal junction and intestinal duplication was suspected. Laparotomy ileocecal resection was performed. Histopathological examination revealed that the mass was an intestinal duplication, the wall of which was lined by gastric mucosal epithelium. The postoperative course was uneventful.
