Abstract
Pulmonary hamartoma isrelatively frequent among benign pulmonary tumors. About 70 cases of pulmonary hamartoma of the bronchial lumen type have been reported to date in Japan. We encountered a case of pulmonary hamartoma extending to the pulmonary parenchyma and bronchial lumens. A 55-year-old woman, had a daily complaint of cough. Because a massive lesion with a regular margin accompanied by calcification was observed in the right S^8 on a chest X-ray film and a contrast enhanced CT scan, she was admitted for detailed examinations and treatment. Bronchoscopy reveled a smooth surfaced pedunculated polyp like protrusion at the entrance of the right B^8, and the polyp could be resected by biopsy and was histologically diagnosed as cartilaginous pulmonary hamartoma. Because the polyp was suspected of having continuity to the intrapulmonary tumor from imaging findings, right inferior lobectomy was performed. The resected specimen was histologically diagnosed as cartilaginous pulmonary hamartoma. This case was determined to have cartilaginous pulmonary hamartoma in a very rare developmental form, expanding to the pulmonary parenchyma and bronchial lumens.
