Abstract
Background. Pulmonary sarcoma is an extremely rare tumor. We report a case of myxofibrosarcoma which was diagnosed preoperatively as pulmonary sarcoma, and recurred 15 months after surgical resection. Case. A 49-year-old man who complained of fever and cough visited a local clinic in November 2008. A chest X-ray film revealed an abnormal shadow in the right upper field, and he was referred to our hospital. Chest CT showed a 50-mm tumor in the right upper lung field, and therefore malignancy was strongly suspected. Transbronchial biopsy confirmed a diagnosis of sarcoma (cT2aN0M0, stage IB), and a right upper lobectomy was performed. The pathological diagnosis was myxofibrosarcoma (pT3N0M0, stage IIB). However, 15 months later, recurrence in the mediastinum was diagnosed. Chemotherapy with ifosfamide/adriamycin and gemcitabine/docetaxel was performed, which showed stable disease (SD). Conclusion. We report a resected case of pulmonary myxofibrosarcoma. Curative surgical resection is the treatment of choice, but local recurrence occurs frequently, therefore, the indications of chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy need to be established.
