Abstract
The relationship between olfactory and the other four sensations was examined based on verbal expressions for skin lotions. In this study, 59 panelists, using 26 words selected for this experiment, evaluated 4 kinds of subtle fragrance lotion. The 24 words among the 26 words, which all expressed some sensory attribute of the 4 sensations except olfactory, were categorized into 4 groups, so that each group had 6 words respectively according to the sensory attribute. The other 2 words expressed a certain synthetic evaluation, that is, ”comfort” and ”sense of high quality”. The results of principal component analysis demonstrated strong relations between olfactory and haptic sensations and suggested that haptic expressions maintained stability of relationship between the expressions. The results of the multiple regression analysis demonstrated that visual and haptic sensations were very important for the synthetic evaluation and suggested that haptic expressions played the important roles differently from the other 4 sensations in the syneasthetic verbal expressions of fragrance.
