The Japanese species of Pentaphyllus DEJEAN, 1821 are reviewed. The following new synonymies are proposed (senior synonyms first): Pentaphyllus ensifera (FAUVEL, 1904) = P. dilatipes SHIBATA, 1978, syn. nov.; P. biconiger GEBIEN, 1914 = P. lewisi KASZAB, 1982, syn. nov.; P. quadricornis GEBIEN, 1914 = P. philippinensis KASZAB, 1956, syn. nov.; P. ensifera (FAUVEL, 1904) = P. punctatus KULZER, 1957, syn. nov.; P. quadricornis GEBIEN, 1914 = P. tokarensis NAKANE, 1963, syn. nov.; P. oblongus LEWIS, 1894 = Sakaiomenimus todai ANDO, 2003, syn. nov.; and this species is a member of the genus Sakaiomenimus ANDO, 2003 Lectotypes of Pentaphyllus biconiger GEBIEN, 1914 and Pentaphyllus quadricornis GEBIEN, 1914 are designated. An identification key to the Japanese species is given.
