The Japanese species of the flower fly genus Mallota Meigen are revised, and 13 species are recognized, of which
two are new species: M. spinosa Hirooka & Maruyama, sp. nov. and M. thompsoni Hirooka & Maruyama, sp. nov. The following species are synonymized: Imatisma dimorpha Shiraki, 1930 (M. dimorpha), syn. nov. (with M. eristaliformis Sack, 1910); Imatisma ambiguum Shiraki, 1968 (M. ambigua), syn. nov., M. shirakii Peck, 1985, syn. nov. and M. yakushimana Kassebeer, 1996, syn. nov. (with M. rubripes Matsumura, 1916). Key to the Japanese species is given. Habitus photographs and illustration of male genitalia of all the species are provided.
