Metopia higae sp. nov. is described from Iriomote-Jima Island, Ryukyu, Japan. This species is very similar to Metopia argyrocephala (Meigen, 1824) widely distriburted in the Holarctic Region including the main islands of Japan, but it is easily distinguished by the characteristic shape of the male genitalia. A description and photographs of the type specimens are given in this paper. A taxonomic key to the Japanese Metopia spp., including the new species, is provided for identification.
