After examining 349 specimens of Arge berberidis Schrank, 1802, and Arge simillima (Smith, 1874) from Europe, Turkey, China, Korea and Japan, we have concluded that the characters previously used for distinguishing the two species are not useful, while the shape of the ovipositor sheath and the abdominal tergum 10 and the color of the subanal plate of the female and the trunk of the late instar larva serve to separate the two species. Arge simillima var. asahi Takeuchi, 1932, is a synonym of A. rejecta (Kirby, 1882), not a synonym of A. simillima. Berberis amurensis Rupr. var. latifolia Nakai is a new host record in Korea. The available information about the distribution and life history of A. simillima is reviewed and discussed.
