In order to study changes of pulmonary function following transfusion of FDC (perfluorodecaline) emulsion for treatment of hemorrhagic shock, 30 rabbits were anesthetized with 1% halothane balanced with oxygen and ventilated by a volume limited ventilator.
Hemodilution with FDC were performed in 6 animals out of 30. Namely 5ml/kg of arterial blood was withdrawn and double amount of FDC was infused 6 times in every 10 minutes. Arterial blood pressure decreased markedly and pulmonary compliance increased sharply following repeated blood exchanges with FDC. And 5 animals out of 6 died during hemodilution.
In the first group, other 6 animals were left under the controlled condition for 240 minutes as the control group. The remained 18 animals were bled arterially and their arterial blood pressure decreased to 50mmHg and left for 120 minutes later. In the second group, 6 animals were reinfused their own blood withdrawn later. In the third group, 6 animals were infused FDC in the equal amount of blood shed and in the fourth group 6 animals were infused FDC double amount of blood shed. Arterial blood pressure recovered in the second and fourth group comparably but did not in the third group. Although reinfusion of blood withdrawn increased physiological shunt paralleled to the increase of arterial pressure, infusion of FDC in the fourth group remained physiological shunt lowered and increased atrerial Po2 higher than that in the second group.
The above data indicated that administration of FDC may be applicable to treat dysfunction under hemorrhagic shock.
