A continuous culture method for Babesia gibsoni has been established, but it requires medium exchange every 24 hr. We attempted to extend the medium exchange interval. We utilized four B. gibsoni isolates: a wild-type (WT), a diminazene aceturate (DA)-sensitive, a DA-resistant, and an atovaquone (ATV)-resistant isolate. These isolates were cultured with a 24-, 48-, or 72-hr interval for six days. No significant differences were observed in the parasitemia level among any of the isolates between the 24- and 48-hr intervals. However, the parasitemia levels of the DA-sensitive and DA-resistant isolates were significantly lower with the 72-hr interval than with the 24-hr interval. Moreover, the parasites were successfully maintained with the 48-hr interval for a long period.
