Amid intensifying international competition for research development and fund acquisition, research performances are quantitatively evaluated by countries, research organizations, and individual researchers. Accordingly, a wide range of bibliometric indexes beyond the Impact Factor, such as the h-index and field-standardized indicators have been developed and are being widely used around the world. On the other hand, due to the rapid development of information and communications technology, forms of information dissemination have greatly changed. Altmetrics, a new method of measuring the impact of research based on article-level metrics, has generated much interest and anticipation. This article discusses about the altmetrics and its associated problems after introducing several bibliometric indexes and important points concerning their usage.
