Societal Aspects of Artificial Intelligence ― AI in ELSI

Abstract

The contemporary artificial intelligence (AI) technology that has become the third boom since around 2011 significantly differs from those in the past in the sense that it involves society broadly. In this paper, after discussing the essence of artificial intelligence, we overview the discussions on ethical, legal and social issues (ELSI), and summarize the issues on ethical principles in both R&D and exploitation of advanced artificial intelligence techniques. We will also discuss subtle ELSI problems and explore future prospects.
