Abstract

Japan’s intellectual property system, established during the Meiji era, has long been utilized by many companies. However, recent technological innovations like AI, business diversification, and changing economic and international conditions have led to numerous system revisions. The evolving business environment now demands that IP practitioners address new tasks such as technology openness, standardization, and IP landscape activities. Additionally, their role has expanded to include IP strategy formulation and strengthened collaboration with business, management, and other stakeholders. This article provides an overview of the intellectual property system in light of these changes and outlines the evolving duties of IP practitioners.
