The dynamic towline tension occurs due to relative ship motion between tow and towed ship during the emergency tow of disabled ships in rough sea. The secondary disaster would often be caused by the towline breakage accident. The prediction of the unstable motion of the towed ships is quite important to estimate the accurate towline tension. The authors have so far been investigating the towline tension during tow making both model experiment and at-sea experiment in comparison with the numerical calculation. The authors made a towing experiment using a training vessel by the cooperation with Maritime Safety University. However, the sea condition was comparatively calm, because it was done at the Seto Inland Sea. The Moving kinematic GPS system was adopted for measuring the distance between tow and towed ship in the Sagami Bay in winter. The relation between towline tension and the measured distance has been investigated. The drift experiment was also made and drift speed, drift direction and bow direction during drift were measured to compare with the simulated calculation results.
