The primary objectives of this thesis are as follow: 1) to explore the phonological rules of onomatopoeia conducted with CVCV roots; 2) considering some morphological aspect of Japanese onomatopoeia words, to examine the relationship between the sound symbolism of onomatopoeia markers. The sentences were collected from the corpus for Sino-Japanese translation. It was found that 19 Japanese consists of 6 mimetic onomatopoeia and 7 non-onomatopoeia ideophones. Based on the corpus data, the sound and meaning of the words containing the choked sound and the syllabic nasal were found different to those of the phonetic forms in the Japanese onomatopoeia and mimetic words.
