Focusing on the Sequence Organization

Abstract
In this study, the author focused on the initiation of narratives in casual conversation in Japanese-Chinese contact situations, and clarified the characteristics of the sequence organization consisting of narrator and listener utterances. The analysis revealed the following; (1) the sequence of narrative initiation has two patterns, one is "basic pattern" which consisting of the first and second utterances, the other is "extended pattern" which the sequence is extended. (2) learners were active as narrators, although as listeners, they were less active in initiating the narrative in the first utterance and in responding to the narrative of the native speakers.
