Generative AI technology is rapidly advancing and being integrated into education from primary to higher levels, driven by the shift to ICT and online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Generative AI, like ChatGPT, is used for automating evaluations, providing efficiency and consistency, and aiding in Japanese language education. This study compared ChatGPT’s conversational ability assessments with actual OPI levels, finding discrepancies but also valuable insights. Future research aims to refine AI prompts and expand data use, emphasizing AI as a supportive educational tool.
