Using the ARCS model by Keller, we examined whether the MY Kotoba activity, in which learners share words that they want to learn, is effective for increasing motivation for vocabulary learning. The survey indicated that learners who participated in this activity enjoyed learning vocabulary selected from their peers’ perspective and acquired a proactive and autonomous learning attitude. However, the learners did not all agree with the usefulness of the selected words. We hope to improve the design of the MY Kotoba activity so learners can feel that the words they learn through it are useful.
