Language teachers in local communities assume that students will learn kana on their own. Students who do not will have trouble following class instruction and often drop out. To address this issue, a pilot instructor training course was implemented for individuals with experience as Japanese language supporters, with the aim of providing instruction in kana learning. Reflections from the participants revealed that the training course needs to incorporate hands-on experience in supporting learners and to develop the instructor’s perspective. The use of technical terminology is also an issue.
