Technical students are required to prepare various kinds of papers such as reports, handouts, papers for academic journals and Doctor theses. This paper is aimed at clarifying the discourse structure of these scientific documents, in order to prepare a syllabus for Technical Reading and Writing courses. We focused on functional words which produce coherent discourse in scientific texts, by observing the textual means employed by authors to portray attitudes towards objects, and describe the technical methodology used and results of observations. Finally, we present a discourse-based framework of functional words to aid Japanese learners in comprehending scientific papers.
