The causes of the casualties in the off-Izu-Peninsula earthquake 1974, the near-Izu-Oshima earthquake 1978 and the off-Miyagi-Prefecture earthquake 1978 are investigated and it revealed that the importance of slope hazards has increased remarkably in recent times. Slope hazards classified into those in cuts and fills for hig hways, those in newly developed residential lands and those in almost natural slopes are discussed. It is poin ted out that a more careful planning and designing is desirable not to increase hazard potential unreasonably, and also that an administrative control is necessary in locating various projects or in other respects where technical improvement at present is difficult. Further progress in recognizing slopes with high hazard potential is desirable for minimizing hazards in natural-slopes.
