The authors collected small mammals on Sado Island which lies in the Japan Sea about 32 km off Niigata and is situated on the northern coast of Central Honshu, the main island of Japan. Collecting was carried out during August 2-5, 1966, using snap traps.
At Marutsuburi (alt. 120 m), we took the specimens listed below. The vegetation of this area was a mixed forest consisting chiefly of Cryptomeria and Quercus. Apodemus speciosus sadoensis, _??_11, _??_4
At Mt. Myoken (alt. 1, 000 m), we took the specimens listed below. The vegetation of this area was shrubs consisting chiefly of Acer.
Apodemus speciosus sadoensis, _??_11, _??_9
Apodemus argenteus, _??_6, _??_6
Microtus montebelli brevicorpus, _??_
Frequency distribution tables of body weight of Apodemus are shown in Tables 1 and 3. Average tail length, hind foot length and testicle size of each species are shown in Table 2. No pregnant females were collected.
We noted that the island form, Apodemus speciosus sadoensis, was larger in body sizes than the mainland form, A. s. speciosus.
