Acoustic positioning systems have been used for an unmanned submersible. However position measuring is affected by environmental factors such as scattering in the sea, ambient noise, thrusters noise and others. In this paper a new criterion of the system performance is introduced. This is expressed by means of the average system detection probability of submersible positions over an operating region based on detection theory. The expression may be useful as a figure of merit to design the reliable navigation system for the submersible. Computer simulation study of the system which has been developed for a measuring system of oceanographic parameters by means of an unmanned submersible (1) is presented. The results show to give an insight into design problems of acoustic navigation systems for unmanned submersible vehicles.
