LPG is considered one of the most promising alternative gaseous fuels because of its potential emission reduction and relatively low fuel price compared to gasoline. The liquid phase LPG injection (LPLi) system could achieve high power and clean exhaust emissions with more precise injection control. To supply the liquid LPG in fuel injectors and fuel rail, a pump module is required. This study has focused on the development of DC turbine type LPLi pump considering discharged flow rate, cavitation, returnless fuel system in rig and real engine application. The discharged flow rate of turbine pump was examined with various fuel blends of LPG. The experimental results of the discharged flow rate of turbine type fuel pump have equivalent performance using summer season LPG fuel compared to BLDC one. The cause of pressure drop has been thought as the cavitation phenomena at high speed impeller component. This study investigates the cavitation phenomena in DC turbine type fuel pump with analyzing pressure distribution in various pump locations using cavitation test rig. The test results were validated by simulation tool by CFX. Finally, the suitability of returnless fuel system was assessed with specially designed LPG chamber and real LPLi engine application.
