Recently, permanent magnets have shown excellent practical performance characteristics. A description is given of a magnetic device with rotational ratio n constructed using a permanent magnet. When n ≠ 1, it operates as a magnetic gear and when n = 1, it operates as a magnetic coupling.
As a magnetic gear, we used SmCo5 for the permanent magnet. The specimen was arranged along an involute curve on the tooth of pinion and grear. A magnetic gear has a gear ratio of 1/3 and the maximum transmitted torque is 5.5 Nm. Rotating speed of the pinion is 2000 rpm in no load condition.
As a magnetic coupling, we used Sr ferrite for the permanent magnet. In a static test using attraction type coupling, the maximum transmitted torque was 30 Nm. In a dynamic performance test, we obtained a maximum torque of 25 Nm at N= 1000 rpm.
These magnetic devices seem to hold promise for the development of magnetic power transmission in future.
