The recording characteristics and the durability of the double layer perpendicular flexible disk were studied. The disks were continuously produced by a magnetron sputtering roll coater. An impurity gas addition into the sputtering argon gas was found to affect both magnetic properties and flatness of the disk. The durability of the disk was significantly influenced by the flatness.
The disk prepared under the conditions of oxygen partial pressure of 1.5x10-3 Pa and total sputtering gas pressure of 1.5x10-1 Pa showed more than 10 million passes of durability at high recording density of 100 kFCI.
