Two-dimensional finite-element-method (FEM) calculations of a shielded single-layer magnetoresistive (MR) read head are reported. The FEM calculations include magnetic interactions between the MR film, the shields, and the magnetic field of recorded transitions. The MR output is computed for different values of shield thickness, flying height, shield permeability, and bias current density, assuming that the magnetization is linear with respect to the internal magnetic field intensity. The MR outputs for a single arctangent transition and for an all-ones 20-bit pattern of arctangent transitions are reported.
