The present contribution reviews the current status of ferrimagnetic oxides for magneto-optical recording where special attention is paid to iron garnet films deposited by pyrolysis and sputtering. The magnetic and magneto-optical properties are discussed. The influence of the preparation conditions and the annealing treatments controlling microstructure, grain size and homogeneity of the films are analyzed with respect to their relevance to structure-sensitive quantities such as coercivity, noise and other recording parameters determining the performance of magneto-optical disks.
