Abstract
Giant magnetoresistance (GMR) and structural properties were investigated for Ni66Fe16Co18/Cu multilayers prepared on various (Fe, NiFeCo, SiN, Pt, Cr, and Zr) buffer layers by using an rf sputtering method. The structure and the saturation field of the multilayers were found to change depending on the buffer layers. A Zr buffer layer strongly enhances the (111) orientation but influences neither the GMR nor the saturation field. On the other hand, Fe and Cr buffer layers, when they are as thin as 0.5 nm, enhance the (111) orientation but degrade the GMR; when they are as thick as 3 to 5 nm, they significantly increase the saturation field.
