BaFe12O19 epitaxial hexaferrite films were prepared on c-plane (0001) sapphire substrates by pulsed laser deposition at various substrate temperatures and oxygen atmosphere pressures. Physical properties of the films such as their crystal structure, surface morphology, magnetization, and magneto-optics were evaluated. It was found that the epitaxial films with highly crystallographical quality could be prepared at a substrate temperature of 780°C and an oxygen atmosphere pressure of 200 mTorr. The saturation magnetization Ms and uniaxial anisotropy constants Ku were determined to be about 350 G and 3.0 × 106 erg/cc, respectively, which are close to the values for the bulk material.
