We investigated formation of Fe-N solid solution by applying a mechanical alloying process to mixed powders of Fe and Fe4N. Following the collapse of the fcc structure of Fe4N at an early stage of mechanical milling, a product that has a bcc-like structure was formed. A certain amount of increase in magnetization was observed corresponding to the formation of this structure, although its value did not exceed that of iron.
