This study was carried out to classify the aorta from a morphological point of view, to measure the aortic size and the main arterial size, and to investigate the common origin of the intercostal and subcostal arteries.
The materials were 37 aortas gained from adult Japanese cadavers.
The results obtained were as follows :
1) Classification of the aorta
Type I : The whole aorta shows cane configulation and has no significant bend (33.3%).
Type II : Both the thoracic and abdominal aorta bend to the right (13.9%).
Type III : Both the thoracic and abdominal aorta bend to the left (19.4%).
Type IV : The abdominal aorta bends mainly to the right (27.8%).
Type V : The abdominal aorta bends mainly to the left (5.6%).
2) The aortic and main arterial size were measured. The starting point of the aortic length measurement was right side wall of the orgin of the brachiocephalic trunk.
a) Correlation between the aortic length (x cm) and the aortic circumference (y mm)
y=-0.653x+77.8
r=0.56
b) Correlation between the aortic length (x cm) and the aortic wall thickness (y mm)
y=-6.8×10-3x+1.6
r=-0.23
c) Correlation between the aortic circumference (cx m) and the aortic wall thickness (y mm)
Y=6.6×10-3x+0.97
r=0.41
3) The highest incidence of a common origin of the intercostal and subcostal arteries was found in the 10 th intercostal arteries and there was no common origin in the 7 th intercostal and subcostal arteries.
