Abstract
Computer typesetting systems are already employed by several newspaper companies which cover the whole procedure of typesetting through printing, and the daily Nikkan Fukui adopted JEM-NEAC 7500 photocomposing system. They developed an automated newspaper editing system called FENICS (Fukui Editor's News Information Computer System) which produces 16-page editions on weekdays and 24-page ones on Saturdays. Procedures such as input of manuscripts, monitor output, proofreading on display devises (using floppy disks), preparation of original plates for printing are computerized, which as a whole brought about decisive reduction of manpower and input errors, reforming of conservative structure peculiar to newspaper offices and so on. Supporting systems of training of the entire staff in keypunching and team editing system also characterize the FENICS. Future implications of the system are also discussed.
