Abstract
A brief history and present conditions of the online system of national postal life insurance service in the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications is given. This is a centralized online system with a large computer system, NEAC 9200, placed at the Tokyo and Kyoto District Postal Insurance Offices, respectively. Other district insurance offices serve as subcenters to which about 1,100 collecting and delivery post offices are connected online through the nation-wide data communications network on exclusive lines. Non-delivering local post offices (about 17,000) are connected off-line where data are to be processed off-line. One of its features is the use of magnetic cards as terminal input medium for the processing of a large quantities of premium and repayment of loan datd.
