Abstract

This paper describes the substantial revision of terms in the fields of medicine, agriculture and biology of the JICST Thesaurus 1981 edition. This revision aims at covering all of the areas in life science including biochemistry, pharmacy and agricultural chemistry. Subject categories have increased to 47, but formerly the number was 19. The total number of descriptors, formerly 4970, is 9362, Nondescriptors have increased to 1836, but formerly 1395. The way of collecting and arranging terms, the scope of each subject category, major revising points derived from 1978 edition of the Thesaurus, and levels of terms (BT and NT) and relation of terms (RT) are explained. Also it mentions the matters to be attended to in indexing and retrieving along with some examples.
