Abstract
The Science and Technology Agency conducted the questionnaire on 1,752 companies capital of which is more than 1 billion yen from June to August, 1994 (valid response ratio was 69.6%). It is found that Japanese firms emphasize creation of their distinctive high-value-added products through research and development (R&D) as same as development of products that meets consumer needs in their corporate strategy. And it is also clarified that what firms expect of the national government is not so much provision of direct financial assistance but promotion of basic and pioneering research. The other items studied in the questionnaire were changes in the importance of R&D in the business strategy and international situations concerning science and technology, etc.
