The Science and Technology Agency conducted the questionnaire on 1,752 companies capital of which is more than 1 billion yen from June to August, 1994 (valid response ratio was 69.6%). It is found that Japanese firms emphasize creation of their distinctive high-value-added products through research and development (R&D) as same as development of products that meets consumer needs in their corporate strategy. And it is also clarified that what firms expect of the national government is not so much provision of direct financial assistance but promotion of basic and pioneering research. The other items studied in the questionnaire were changes in the importance of R&D in the business strategy and international situations concerning science and technology, etc.

A state-of-the-art review, and a survey of academics in Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States covered the following themes: origins of professional articles; state of the printed journal; electronic publishing—pioneering research and development; publishing via commercial database hosts; publishing via the Internet and related academic networks; publishing via portable electronic media; tensions in document supply and interlending; academics as authors and readers of professional articles, and universities as publishers. It was concluded that the contribution of electronic publishing lies in greater diversity and choice in a marketplace where at-source-subsidized publishing competes with fee-for-service publishing. Recommendations are made for new relationships among academics, publishers, libraries, and universities.

Multimedia databese systems are the database management systems which can manage not only the traditional type of alpha-numeric data but also new type of data such as texts, images, videos, and sounds. The research and development of multimedia databeses were initiated about a decade ago, but the true multimedia databese systems have not been developed yet. In this paper, we investigate the definition of multimedia databeses, the effectiveness of the object-oriented approach to construct multimedia databeses, and the architecture of a multimedia databese management system OMEGA being under development at the author's research group so that the readers can get the entire figure of multimedia databese system technology. Single medium databeses such as text, image, video, and sound databeses are also examined to overview the current status of multimedia component database technologies.
