One hundred and two cases of advanced gastric carcinoma were subjected to this study.
Stromal reaction was classified as fibrous stromal defense and cellular stromal defense.
These fibrous stromal defense was studied from a view of connective tissue's proliferation.
1) Structure such as fibroblast sheath encircling gastric gland was always seen in well diff. adenocarcinoma but was not seen in poorly diff. adenocarcinoma due to the failure of glandular formation (ex: signet ring cell carcinoma, mucocellulare type).
2) Proliferation of connective tissue was excessive in poorly diff. adenocarcinoma due to the exhibition of the reminiscence or absence of basement membrane. These connective tissue's proliferation indicated the formation of collagen fiber and mucopolysaccharide. The effect of mucopolysaccharide on the growth of tumor cell was reported by Takeuchi, Ozzello and Sakaki.
It is strongly suggested that the interaction between the cancer cell and pericancerous connective tissue might be one of the important spreading factor of gastric carcinoma.
