【Purpose】Lens distortion, which is reported to occur during the spectacle processing process, affects the feeling of wearing spectacles and degrades the quality of vision. In this study, we focused on the aberration caused by lens distortion and attempted to analyze its wavefront aberration.
【Subjects and Methods】The lens was attached to the model eye and the wavefront aberration of the model eye cornea through the lens was measured using the Wave-Front Analyzer KR-1W. Wavefront aberration was measured 10 times in the model eye, the glass optic lens, and the plastic lenses (1) to (7) made with a distortion degree of 0 to 3 degrees, respectively. Statistical analysis of the aberration amounts obtained was performed.
【Results】The aberrations (Mean±SD) at 0 degrees of plastic lens distortion (lens (1)) were 0.0486±0.002 μm, 0.0693±0.007 μm, 0.0113±0.001 μm, 0.0177±0.008 μm, 0.1185±0.002 μm and 0.1467±0.003 μm at 4 mm diameter in the order of trefoil, coma aberration, tetrafoil, astigmatism, spherical aberration and total high-order aberrations. The distortion 3 degrees (lens (7)) were 0.8803±0.357 μm, 0.4087±0.14 μm, 0.4764±0.121 μm, 0.0653±0.025 μm, 0.1965±0.02 μm, and 1.1176±0.374 μm. Significant differences were found for all aberrations at 4mm diameter for lenses (1) and (7). (p<0.01, Dunnett method)
【Conclusion】Strong distortion was found to produce higher-order aberrations. The lens distortion should be inspected when performing a spectacle check in an eye clinic. If lens distortion is found, and we should work with the optician to address the lens distortion.
