Abstract

【Purpose】To report the effectiveness of the Dalton glasses for color compensation.

【Case】We asked two patients with color vision defects, protanope and deuteranope each, to wear the Dalton glasses and various tests were performed to examine if their color vision deficiency was improved. The tests included the Ishihara color vision test, the Tokyo Medical University color vision test, Panel D-15, the Anomaloscope, test using color combinations difficult for people with color vision deficiency to distinguish as described on the website page of Japan Ophthalmologists Association, and test using images of landscapes and familiar objects. About half of the tests showed improvements.

【Conclusion】The Dalton glasses enhance the brightness of reds and darken greens and that makes it easier for people with defective color vision to distinguish colors. Although the effect is limited and does not lead to normal color perception, the use of the Dalton glasses could improve the quality of life for people with color vision deficiency.
